Sanlu to recall milk power as baby dies

The Sanlu Group recalled about 700 tons of its baby milk food, as one of the infants diagnosed with kidney stones after being fed the food died in Gansu province Thursday. One of the country’s largest dairy products’ makers said its milk food had been contaminated with a chemical called melamine. The announcement came after the company conducted an internal investigation.
A Gansu provincial health department spokesman said that altogether 59 infants have been diagnosed with kidney stones in the province this year. Reports said many of them had been fed the same brand of milk food. No infants were diagnosed with kidney stones last year or in 2006 in the province.
Health experts said there is a link between melamine and kidney stones.

The first case was reported by the People’s Liberation Army No 1 Hospital in Gansu’s provincial capital of Lanzhou on June 28. Similar cases have been reported from across the country - from the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, Gansu and Shaanxi to Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui and Hunan provinces. But the total number of cases is not known.
Samples of the milk food were tested in a State-run laboratory, the country’s food and drugs watchdog said. The Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) launched a probe on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, which is helping with the investigation, said traces of cyanuramide that can cause kidney stones were found in Sanlu-brand milk products.
Earlier, Sanlu had said its products did not have any quality problems because they had passed State food safety tests. Yang Li, spokesperson for Shijiazhuang-based company, said a Sanlu team has left for Gansu to conduct its own probe.
Another Sanlu official said the milk food might have been mislabeled, or “someone” might have been selling spurious products under the company’s brand, according to Xinhua.
Sanlu Group, based in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, is partly owned by New Zealand dairy export giant Fonterra Cooperative Group.
In a statement carried by the New Zealand Press Association, Fonterra said its Chinese partner was moving to ensure its products were safe.
Sanlu products have caused food scares before, too. In 2005, Tianjin authorities seized hundreds of cases of mislabeled Sanlu yogurt.
Kidney stones are small, solid masses that form when salt or minerals normally found in urine crystallize inside the kidney. They can move out of the kidney if they become too big and cause infection, and even lead to permanent kidney damage.
In 2004, at least 13 babies in Anhui province died after drinking spurious milk food, which investigators later found had no nutritional value. The deaths rocked the country and triggered widespread probes into food and health safety.

Nothing ventured,nothing gained. In other words, I don’t get what I want ,if I come far from it.At this moment, I suddenly forget what I want,let alone what I can get. Constant changes are revolving in my mind although there are not significant. I’m not sure whether I can suit this change or not.
In recent days, I was busy with my work all the time even no rest without time. However, I enjoyed this busy life as I felt rich you know. All of sudden, I resume the easy way again. In deed , I really feel tired. I need to have a rest.

Seligman is leading the charge in what might be called Happiness Revolution in psychology.

Since World War II, psychologists have focused on fixing what is broken -repairing psychosis, and neurosis. Research has piled up steadily when it comes to looking at patients who are neurotic or dysfunctional, while the happy or joyful people among us have received little scientific scrutiny.
When Seligman did a search to find academic articles about such “positive psychology” he found only 800 out of 70,000.

“Psychologists tend to be concerned with taking a negative 8 person, and helping him get to negative 2,” said Seligman, a University of Pennsylvania psychology professor. “My aim is to take a plus 2 person and boost him to a plus 6.”

In the last 50 years, statistics have show that we are less happy as a people.

“While our quality of life has increased dramatically over that time, and we’ve become richer, we’re in an epidemic of depression,” Seligman said. “Depression is 10 times more common now, and life satisfaction rates are down as well.”
Seligman argues that the new science he writes about is shifting psychology’s paradigm away from its narrow-minded focus on pathology, victimology, and mental illness towards positive emotion, virtue and strength, and positive institutions that increase people’s happiness quotient.

If you want to be happy, forget about winning the lottery, getting a nose job, or securing a raise.

In his new book, Authentic Happiness, psychologist Martin Seligman argues that overall lifetime happiness is not the result of good genes, money, or even luck. Instead, he says we can boost our own happiness by capitalizing on the strengths and traits that we already have, including kindness, originality, humor, optimism, and generosity. He has christened the discipline “Positive Psychology,” arguing that we would be better off building on our own strengths rather than bemoaning, and, hence, trying to repair, our weaknesses.

By frequently calling upon their strengths, people can build up natural buffers against misfortune and negative emotions, he said.

Science has shown that there are three distinct roads to being a happy person -though happy might not mean what you think. Material goods - even simple ones like ice cream cones, and massages - are only stimuli, things that fleetingly give people a boost.

Research found that lottery winners are no happier years after their windfall than they had been before, and that paraplegics tended to be no less happy in the years after their misfortune than they were before.
“We used to think that a happy person was just someone who giggled a lot,” Seligman said. “But if you define it solely by how much you laugh, you confine yourself to one category.”
Here are the three happy people categories that Seligman has set forth in the book:

The Good Life: Some happy people are low on pleasure, but high on “absorption and immersion,” meaning they take great pleasure in the things that they do. “Think of these people as hobbyists who become so immersed in their work that time ceases to exist,” Seligman said. “A person who enjoys gardening discovers that the day has gone by without notice, for example.”

The Pleasant Life: This is someone who laughs a lot, and thrives on pleasures, such as eating good food. These are people who seem surrounded with contentment, pleasure and hope.

The Meaningful Life: Those who apply their highest strengths and virtues for the greater good, as through charities and volunteer work, religion or politics.

To cultivate happiness, you must first identify which of the aforementioned happiness categories you fall into, then ascertain your individual strengths and virtues. Next, apply the qualities in such a way as to enhance your happiness-generating category.

Australian scientists are trying to give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep in a bid to cut the emission of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo flatulence contains no methane and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who emit large quantities of the harmful gas.

While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a billowing smokestack pushing out carbon dioxide, livestock passing wind contribute a surprisingly high percentage of total emissions in some countries.

“Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from enteric methane from cattle and sheep,” said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the Queensland state government.

“And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base, they’re actually up around 50 percent,” he said.

Researchers say the bacteria also makes the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers.

But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate the bacteria, before they can even start to develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep.

Another group of scientists, meanwhile, has suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos. world of warcraft gold

The idea is controversial, but about 20 percent of health conscious Australians are believed to eat the national symbol already.

“It’s low in fat, it’s got high protein levels and it’s very clean in the sense that basically it’s the ultimate free rangeanimal,” said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales’s institute of environmental studies.
